Tramping Buying Guide

Tramping is an incredible and easy way to experience nature - if you can walk, you can tramp, it's that simple. To make the most of your next great walking adventure check out our tramping must-haves to ensure you stay safe, comfortable and prepared for whatever the trail throws your way!

  • Backpack: A comfortable, properly fitting backpack to carry all your gear is essential. Look for one with adjustable straps and good weight distribution.
  • Hiking Boots or Shoes: Invest in a sturdy pair of hiking boots or shoes with good traction to protect your feet and ankles on rough terrain.
  • Navigation Tools: Bring a map, compass, or GPS device to navigate trails. Familiarise yourself with how to use them before hitting the trail.
  • Water: Carry enough water to stay hydrated throughout your hike. A hydration reservoir or water bottles are both good options. For longer, multi-day treks, a water filtration device is essentail for refilling from natural sources.
  • Snacks and Meals: Pack lightweight, energy-rich snacks and meals to fuel your hike. Trail mix, energy bars, and dehydrated meals are popular choices.

  • Clothing Layers: Dress in layers to adjust to changing weather conditions. Bring moisture-wicking clothing to keep you dry and comfortable.
  • Rain Gear: Always be prepared for rain by bringing a waterproof jacket and pants or a poncho.
  • First Aid Kit: Carry a basic first aid kit containing bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, blister treatment, and any personal medications.
  • Sun Protection: Wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun's rays.
  • Emergency Supplies: Pack essentials like a whistle, emergency blanket, fire starter, multi-tool and personal locator beacon in case of emergencies.

  • Headlamp: or Torch: Essential for hiking in low light conditions or if your hike extends into the evening.
  • Multi-day Hiking Essentials: If you're planning a multi-day hike, additional gear like a tent, sleeping bag, and compact gas cooker and gas cannisters may be necessary.
  • Personal Items: Don't forget essentials like your ID, cell phone, cash, and any permits required for your hike.
  • Trekking Poles: Optional but helpful, especially on steep or uneven terrain. Trekking poles can provide stability and reduce strain on your joints.
  • Trash Bags: Practice Leave No Trace principles by packing out all your trash. Bring extra bags for picking up litter along the trail.

Before heading out on your tramp, research the trail you'll be walking, check the weather forecast, and let someone know your travel plans. And always stay safe by staying on marked trails, respecting wildlife, and being mindful of your surroundings. Happy tramping!
